Some Changes in NBA 2K23

With each new iteration of NBA 2K comes a flurry of obscure gameplay features. With a series of more focused changes, such as adding attributes like launch height, and AI changes focused on game planning and decision-making, NBA 2K23 seems to care more about building on the foundation than adding new, extravagant features.

Many of these changes will also become apparent depending on the difficulty the player chooses. Visual Concepts highlights how approachable the reworked Rookie difficulty is, and the huge contrast between Rookie (the easiest difficulty setting) and Hall of Fame (the hardest setting). If players find Hardmode too difficult to pass, they can buy Madden 23 Coins to improve their skills and speed up quest completion.

In terms of controls, perhaps the most significant change in NBA 2K23 is the redesigned "Pro Stick," with new dunk and dribble gestures. For example, you can now hold the sprint trigger and tap the right stick down twice to grab the hoop and hang on it. These new controls also change the way contacts are made on the lane, which moves through an "adrenaline boost," in which each offensive player has three at a time.

I'm also excited about a few changes to the shot meter, the first being that you can now customize your shot meter. Disappointingly, though, there are only 5 available shot meters to choose from at launch, with an additional 15 available throughout the season (NBA 2K version of the Battle Pass).

Defense got a lot of attention last year, so it makes sense that NBA 2K23 is focusing on offense. One of the more special changes is the new shadow mechanic, which divides each defender with the ball into three zones: left shadow, right shadow, and center shadow. If a player attacks a shadowed defensive position, they will quickly get into trouble. If I notice my opponent is going left a lot, I should be able to shade them in a way that forces them to hit my wall or change tactics.

I was impressed with the attention to detail in the game preview, and there is little evidence that the strong focus on microtransactions has worn off, although the game team seems to realize how frustrating it is to not make progress without saving when creating a new MyPLAYER.
