Who Risked his Life for Love | The Guardian
A Muslim teenage boy in Virginia feared for life when his family tried to force him into an arranged marriage. But in a last-ditch effort to rescue himself, Abdullah sent a letter pleading with the girl's father and listing all they shared in common: love of Jesus and Jesus' love of them both. It worked: the couple is engaged now and planning on attending university together in the US. They're also glad Abdullah used this strategy, because it didn't end their relationship like many forced marriages end - with divorce becoming more common than marriage among Muslims under 30 today.
When Abdullah turned 16 his parents forced him into an arranged marriage. He was to marry a girl from Pakistan and move with her into his parent's home. His parents didn't like Abdullah's relationship with the young Christian girl, Mary. But Abdullah and Mary had fallen in love after meeting at church camp, and they were firm in their intentions to try to make it work. The love story doesn't end there; because of the way the couple handled things, they're now engaged and looking forward to attending university together in the United States, where Mary lives with her family.
When Abdullah was young, he enjoyed reading his Bible and praying to God. In the Muslim faith, you have to pray at certain times during the day so it's easy to get distracted from prayer. But Abdullah had a secret prayer place where he would go and pray by himself for a little while every day. He kept this secret because Abdullah knew that in his culture and in his religion, both his friends and family would think it was strange that he wanted to pray by himself — they might even think it is not Islamic. Still, when things got bad with his parents, Abdullah made sure they knew about this secret place... and that he would always have a way to pray, if things got bad again.
As time went on, Abdullah and Mary were in love, but their parents did not want them to be together. During the next few years when Abdullah was 17 years old and Mary was 16, they got recognized by their classmates in school for being in love. Many of the other students said it was weird because they are Muslim and unmarried, and yet they were both kissing each other and holding each other's hand at school; we all thought they must be doing something wrong — we didn't know what or why.
Finally, Abdullah and Mary came to the conclusion that they could not be together. Their parents pressured them to break up. But they would not listen. Their parents repeatedly told them that they were too young to be together yet, but their love for each other did not go away. Abdullah kept praying about what he had seen in his dreams several times; he did not believe that his dreams were of himself, but of God's countenance on him and of the eternal union of marriage between him and Mary.
There was also one day when Abdullah had gone out with some friends near his house; when they came back an hour later, he looked very upset because someone had tried to steal his bicycle .
